Check an X (Twitter) username against X's rules: 15 characters, letters, numbers and underscores, no reserved words. Get variations X accepts and open the profile to see if it's taken.

This is an interactive free tool: open [X Username Checker](https://www.fuxux.com/tools/x-username-checker) in a browser to use it.

## Check an X (Twitter) username before you claim it

X usernames are short by design: 15 characters at most, and only letters, numbers and underscores. That rules out any name with a period or a dash, and anything longer than 15 characters, before you even look at whether someone has it. This checker tests those rules first, suggests variations X accepts, and links straight to the x.com address so you can see whether an account already uses it.

If the name you want is taken, X's own advice is to add an underscore before or after it (@lindsay_ or @_lindsay). Your display name is separate: it can be up to 50 characters and include spaces, so the full brand name can live there while the username stays short.

Once your handle is set, you can schedule X posts in Fuxux alongside the other networks you publish to, with a caption written for each one.

## FAQ

### How many characters can an X username have?

Up to 15. Your display name, the bold name above your @username, can be up to 50 characters, so keep the full brand name there.

### What characters are allowed in an X username?

Letters A–Z, numbers 0–9 and underscores. Spaces, periods, dashes and other symbols are not allowed.

### Why can't I use an X username that looks free?

X gives three reasons: the name contains “Twitter” or “Admin”, which only official X accounts can use; it breaks the length or character rules; or it belongs to a suspended or deactivated account, and X doesn't release those names straight away.

### Can I get an inactive X username?

No. X says it can't release inactive usernames at this time, so pick a variation instead, for example with an underscore before or after the name.

### How do I check if an X username is taken?

Check the format here, then open the x.com link. If X shows that the account doesn't exist, the name may be free; X confirms it when you try to save the username in your settings.
